What is an SSL Certificate & why your website needs one!

Business

Today we’re going over what an SSL Certificate is and why you need one for your website. This may seem like a big step to take but it’s really not. In fact, it’s pretty easy to get and well worth it. Every website should have an SSL certificate but there are still websites that don’t have it, let’s make sure yours isn’t one of them.

What is a SSL certificate?

SSL stands for secure socket layer and changes the http to a https on the beginning of your url. It tell customers that your website is encrypted, that your website is secure, trustworthy and that their information is private and safe. If you have an online shop or ecommerce business, you’ll need a SSL Certificate in order to sell because most ecommerce websites require it since you’re capturing credit card information.

Why you need one for your website:

1. Ecommerce: as mentioned above, if you have an ecommerce website, you’re required to have a SSL certificate since you’re capturing credit card information. If you have any type of online shop, you will need one.

2. Builds trust & makes more sales: If your website doesn’t have a SSL certificate, then it’ll show up as ‘insecure’ and can very much deter visitors from staying on your website. 84% of people will not make a purchase from an insecure website (source)

How to get a SSL certificate:

The great news is that it’s incredibly easy (and cheap) to get a SSL Certificate. Most hosting providers offer a complimentary SSL certificate to at least 1 of your websites. If not, you can purchase it from your hosting provider yearly and they’ll automatically add it to your website. Website platforms like Squarespace, Wix, Shopify, Showit, etc. already provide a SSL Certificate with their packages, so you don’t have to worry about it with those companies.

So if you don’t have a SSL Certificate on your website already, definitely take the steps to get one!
