Will Your Website Platform Make Or Break Your Business?

Business

Will your website make or break your business? Dun dun dunnnnn… This is actually a question I don’t often get, at least not in such a blunt way. BUT the idea behind this question, is something I actually do see all the time. The idea is that using a specific platform will somehow help your business succeed or that it somehow can make or break your business.I’m not entirely sure if my thoughts on the subject are controversial or not, but I’ll share them anyways because I think choosing a website platform is a big roadblock for a lot of business owners. As a designer, I see website platform preference all the time within my community and industry. I also see business owners struggling all the time in Facebook groups, on Instagram, etc stressing over the website platform decision, so I do think it’s worth taking the time to answer.

Before I dive in, I want to give a little back story for those of you who don’t know me. I’m a self taught designer, I got my degree in business and learned how to design websites during an internship about 6 years ago. Since then, I’ve designed for different business owners. As a self-taught designer, I’ve worked with a ton of website platforms including: WordPress (multiple themes), Squarespace, Shopify, Wix, 1and1, Google Sites, Weebly, etc. Now, that you know a bit about me, let’s get back to the topic at hand.

The simple answer

The simple answer is NO. I truly don’t believe that your website platform will make or break your business. There is simply way more to success than just a website platform. So why does this decision seem to hold so many people back?

I think it has to do with information overload, comparison-titus, fear & people pushing their preferences. Choosing a website platform, where your business will essentially be living online for awhile, can be tough and there are a lot of things to consider. However, I’ve seen so many successful businesses running on a ton of different platforms. It really doesn’t seem to matter.

I will say, I do think that certain platforms can help grow your business IF and WHEN it actually works for you. I think functionality is extremely important when considering a website platform and using what a platform that adheres to what your needs are for your unique business is extremely important. For example, if you need a shop to sell digital products, make sure your platform allows for that.

But again, you really should not be worrying about whether a website platform will make or break your business.

What you should focus on instead?

Rather than putting your focus on whether or not your website platfrom will bring you success, here’s a list of what you should focus on instead (in no particular order):

– brand experience

– client experience

– marketing

– networking

– providing value

– copy & content

– email marketing

– opt-in

– generating sales

At the end of the day, successful businesses come regardless of website platform. If you’re a business owner and this decision has been holding you back, it’s time to let it go, decide and move on! You’ll find that there will be way more that will dictate success (like work ethic, clarity, mindset, etc). Remember a website platform is just a tool to solidify your business online. So don’t stress about what website platform you choose and simply choose which one will work best for you and your business!
